In times gone by, the Coureurs Des Bois (“runners of the woods” who were early Canadian explorers and fur traders) used Wanigan canoe boxes to store and carry supplies like kitchen gear, food, and other camping items.
There has been a large resurgence in the use of these traditional Wanigans over the last few years with both new and seasoned canoeists alike. We have decided to create our own line of these rugged wanigan canoe boxes but with a twist-we have replaced the old leather straps with a modern rugged military-style harness.
We manufacture our wooden boxes using premium Canadian Western White pine solid wood for its lightweight nature, resistance to warping and durability. Wood planks are laminated using marine-grade adhesive for water resistance, high strength, durability, and versatility then planed to our specifications. These adhesives are specifically formulated to withstand saltwater, UV light, and extreme temperatures fluctuations. Our boxes are constructed using mitred joints for the corners creating a visually appealing, seamless appearance by hiding the end grain of wood. Biscuits are incorporated into the corners to further increase strength and durability. A gasket is used on our lids to prevent water from entering your Wanigan.
For ease of handling and rigging of the Wanigan, we hand sew a military-style webbing harness. This makes loading and unloading the Wanigan easier. Industrial plastic components are machined to precise dimensions to hold the webbing in place. 316 marine grade fasteners are used to affix our webbing guides for corrosion resistance.
Our Wanigans are hand finished with premium grade wood oil for protection against moisture, UV rays, insect and fungal rot.
