Ice picks are crucial for wilderness travel in Canada, especially during winter and late season thaw, primarily due to their use in self-rescue if one breaks through the ice. The ability to quickly retrieve them by providing a grip to pull oneself out of water and onto the ice shelf is critical for survival.

Ice Screws are used in conjunction with ice picks and are used to create a temporary anchor to pull yourself from the water and back onto the ice. It also provides a mounting point to attach your carabiner to; in the event you fall back into the water. An important piece of equipment, especially when travelling solo in winter.

Both holders will provide a simple but effective way of retrieving them in an emergency.

Ice Pick Holders

Carrying ice safety picks when crossing bodies of ice in the backcountry in an easily accessible holder is crucial for self-rescue, in the event you fall through the ice. This allows you to easily and quickly retrieve them when seconds count.

By having the ice picks mounted on a holder instead of dangling around your neck, you can grasp them faster without fumbling and losing time.

Industrial plastic is machined to hold and secure the ice picks firmly within the holder and mounts to any recreational harness. The Ice Pick Holders are machined as a set which includes the ice pick themselves.

Ice Screw Holster

Carrying an ice screw is a vital precaution when crossing frozen lakes solo, because it provides an essential self-rescue mechanism if you fall through weak ice. Used in conjunction with ice safety picks, an ice screw offers supplementary utility and a means of pulling oneself back onto the ice shelf. In a rescue scenario, an ice screw is driven into solid ice a short distance away to provide a secure anchor point for a rope or carabiner, allowing a rescuer to safely pull yourself out of the water and back onto the surface. It also provides a physical attachment point and an anchor to prevent yourself from falling back into the water.

Our Ice Screw Holster uses quick connect buckles and hook and loop (Velcro) to easily attached it to your thigh and is fully adjustable. A curved backing allows you to walk easily without the holster interfering with the ice screw mounted.

Dead Blow Ice Chisel

Our unique dead blow ice chisels offer superior force transfer, reduced user fatigue, and enhanced control compared to a standard ice chisel. The primary benefit of the dead blow design is that it allows all the kinetic energy to be directed into the ice. The internal weights (shot) in a dead blow tool move forward after the face strikes the surface, ensuring the full force of the swing is absorbed by the ice, leading to more efficient breaking. The lack of bounce-back significantly eliminates the shock and vibration that is transmitted back through the handle and to the user's hands and arms. This makes the ice chisel more comfortable to use for extended periods of time and minimizes user fatigue and strain, allowing you to break through ice faster.

We use top of the line tool steel for the hammer head portion. Machined smooth and bored out to close tolerance. The composite handle is threaded onto the hammer for a secure hold. The handle is a 2-piece construction, allowing you to break down the ice chisel for easy transport, especially important if you are transporting the ice chisel on a manual pulk. A leather sheath and a Cordura Nylon travel bag come as standard equipment.
